Challenge
In Nigeria, around 85% of public and private laboratories do not take part in any external assessment program for the quality of their analyses, due to a lack of both funding and experience. This lack of evaluation has a direct influence on the reliability of the tests carried out, which are then used as a basis for diagnosing patients and choosing their treatment.
Innovative solution
The partners are setting up a program to assess the quality of analyses carried out by Nigerian laboratories in the Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt and Enugu regions. Following these assessments, the laboratories receive training and support from the partners to improve the quality of their analyses.
Impact
- Participation of 100 laboratories in the external evaluation program set up by the partners. These laboratories receive personalised support and recommendations to improve the quality of their results.
- Ultimately, the laboratories will provide more reliable test results to Nigerian hospitals and patients, thereby improving the quality of care.

Targeted Sustainable Development Goals
-
By improving the reliability of laboratory results, the project is preventing faulty results which endanger patients’ health and can lead to unnecessary costs.
-
The partners are setting up awareness-raising campaigns for Nigerian laboratories on the importance of taking part in regular quality assessment programs.
