LuxAid Demonstration Fund
Hydroponic production for food security
Enterprise
UKC
Presentation of the enterprise
UKC was set up in 2019 to respond to land pressure issues by developing a solution for intensive fodder production using hydroponics.
Amount of co-financing
EUR 350,000
- Rwanda
- 2024
- Ongoing
Challenge
Rwanda is a small, densely populated country. Pressure on land makes agricultural production particularly expensive in a country where the population is rapidly growing, creating a major risk to food security. In addition, agricultural productivity is generally low.
Innovative solution
Thanks to the co-financing, UKC is setting up three new fodder production sites using a low-tech solution: hydroponics.
Impact
- Up to three times higher productivity than in open fields
- Up to 40 times less water consumption compared to open fields
- Direct impact expected thanks to the project:
- + 110 tons of fodder production each week
- + 174 liters of milk produced per month
Targeted Sustainable Development Goals
-
The optimization of fodder production on a reduced land footprint increases food productivity per sqm.
-
The heightened productivity and efficiency achieved in fodder production significantly contribute to fostering economic growth.
-
Reduced water consumption and minimized land footprint guarantee a more sustainable production process.
-
Hydroponic production has a much smaller land footprint than traditional production approaches and can effectively utilize degraded or unproductive land.
