Hydroponic production for food security

Enterprise

UKC

Presentation of the enterprise

UKC was set up in 2019 to respond to land pressure issues by developing a solution for intensive fodder production using hydroponics.

Amount of co-financing

EUR 350,000

Challenge

Rwanda is a small, densely populated country. Pressure on land makes agricultural production particularly expensive in a country where the population is rapidly growing, creating a major risk to food security. In addition, agricultural productivity is generally low.

Innovative solution

Thanks to the co-financing, UKC is setting up three new fodder production sites using a low-tech solution: hydroponics.

Impact

  • Up to three times higher productivity than in open fields
  • Up to 40 times less water consumption compared to open fields
  • Direct impact expected thanks to the project:
    • + 110 tons of fodder production each week
    • + 174 liters of milk produced per month
