Challenge
Land pressure issues in Rwanda, as well as disruptions in global value chains for animal feed and other goods make it even more important to ensure efficient and sustainable land use.
Innovative solution
By maximizing the efficient use of limited land resources, Kigali Farms achieves remarkable protein yields, making mushrooms a compelling solution for enhancing food security. The co-financing supports the expansion of processing capacity, upgrade of the cold chain infrastructure, and enhancements to growing rooms and compost production.
Impact
Creation of alternative plant-based protein sources that are high yield and can produce vast quantities in a short time on small land plots (mushroom production up to 12 times richer in protein than soy).
Targeted Sustainable Development Goals
-
Mushroom production provides a source of income.
-
Mushroom production enhances protein-rich food productivity per square meter and offers consumers a diversified, highly proteinaceous diet.
