Challenge
Use of charcoal and wood as fuel is a significant source of pollution, including in-door pollution, and CO2 emissions in Rwanda. Furthermore, wood and charcoal as fuel source are putting pressure on natural ecosystems, as well as household expenses.
Innovative solution
Biomassters offers highly efficient pellet stoves for domestic use, helping to reduce the use of charcoal or wood. In order to maximise cost efficiency of usage of pellets, the company is also distributing carbon credit revenues to users.
Impact
- Market expansion aiming to reach +7,000 clients in 2024 and +10,000 in 2025, thus providing a cheaper clean cooking method (pellets cost 30% less than charcoal) and new resources for users through carbon credits received
- Reduction of CO2 emissions (approximately 1 to 5 tonnes per household)
- Decrease in health risks and domestic pollution
Targeted Sustainable Development Goals
-
Creating a solution that lowers the daily effort and expense for every household produces an immediate and sustained impact on poverty.
-
By employing a more efficient fuel source and distributing revenues through carbon credits, costs are reduced, and users can generate additional revenue.
-
The users improve their health conditions and well-being through less indoor pollution (reduced household air pollution by up to 99%).
-
Pellet stoves, utilizing more cost-effective and environmentally friendly resources than those typically employed, provide users with access to an affordable and clean cooking solution.
-
Substituting wood fuel sources reduces the risk of using potentially unsustainably harvested wood, thereby mitigating forest degradation.
